Heirloom Catan Board, Classic
Heirloom Catan Board, Classic
Hand sculpted, molded, and cast Catan board pieces on finished Birch plywood bases.
Tiles are intrinsically colored resin, over-molded onto CNC-cut Birch plywood, with heather felt on the bottom. This is one of the highest quality methods that can be produced by hand, using traditional Special Effects / Prototyping industry methods. I've seen a lot of mini-landscape tiles, but I felt a more representational sculpture could be interesting. Each sculpt is highly detailed and dynamic. Birch plywood is more physically stable than solid wood, and much nicer looking than MDF or press-board. The point was to add a high-end and 20th century material to make this set worth investing in.
This board is the exact same size as the commercially-available die-cut cardboard version supplied with the game itself. This board works with the original Catan game (commercially available, and must be purchased separately) pieces. Cities are neatly registered in circular areas, roads neatly held straight, and roll discs displayed nice and level. I personally drew all the CAD lines for the CNC cutting, and they pieces fit snugly together creating one board surface that doesn't move around or spread out at all.
This style incorporates a hand-sculpted representation of the commodity, cast in that commodity's major color, on a Pecan finished Birch plywood. Resin can be painted if desired. The color is through-and-through, and the plywood is stained and coated in Polyurethane. Each wood tile is finished, loaded into the mold, and the rest is cast directly against it, making it one solid piece forever.
